Looking for a good summer beach read to boost your career, either on your e-reader or in paper form? Here are two suggested titles:
Book: Back on the Career Track: A Guide for Stay-at-Home Moms Who Wantto Return to Work
Author: Carole Fishman Cohen and Vivian Steir Rabin

This book provides a road map for re-entry into the workforce for professional women who have taken time off to raise a family. It provides practical advice on issues ranging from talking to your partner about your re-launch to updating networking and job search skills.
The authors are accomplished women who have experienced this transition for themselves and they offer practical advice for building up your confidence and making the transition back into paid employment.
What I Liked Most
- The "Relaunch Readiness Quiz" is a helpful tool to assess an individual's appetite and logistical ability to re-launch.
- Inspiring stories of real-life re-launchers provide great encouragement to anyone who is hesitant to reenter the workforce
- A wealth of resources and references are provided to help focus your job search efforts
Book: The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business
Author: Charles Duhigg
Reviewer: Susan Britt, a JobsInTEX.com newsletter reader
I have two great take-aways from this book:
On the Power of a Crisis
"Good leaders seize crises to remake organizational habits." A company with dysfunctional institutional habits can't or won't change simply because a leader demands it.
Starbucks and the Habit of Success
Some successful companies, such as Starbucks, have developed training materials for employees that spell out routines for employees to use when they hit rough patches. Manuals exist that teach workers how to respond to specific cues, such as a screaming customer or push back on process. When there is an actual plan in place employees are more likely to use the plan and have a successful outcome, as opposed to having them wing it when a situation arises.
